Dr.Ronen Hizami, MD

Ronen Hizami MD is a graduate of the SUNY Downstate Medical School. He completed his general psychiatry residency at Hillside Hospital/LIJMC and his Child Psychiatry Fellowship at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital/ LIJMC. He has worked with organizations that treat the developmental delayed population functioning as their psychiatric director. In 2000, Dr Hizami started his private practice. Dr Hizami teaches educators and clergy members about psychiatric diagnoses and treatments. Dr. Hizami is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is licensed in NY and NJ. 

Dr Hizami is passionate about empowering through education. This applies to patients, family members, educators, clergy members and society at large. He strives to thoroughly explain psychiatric conditions and their treatments. Realistic expectations are established only through education. 
 
As a psychopharmacologist, Dr. Hizami is a firm believer in the power of medication management. He also believes and espouses that not all problems are solved by the contents of a pill bottle.
 
Dr Hizami is a weekly contributor to ‘The Couch’ in the Yated newspaper.  

Our Team Members

Dr. Michael Bunzel, MD

Born in California, Dr. Bunzel received his Bachelor’s Degree from Stanford University. He continued his medical education at University of Pennsylvania and received his medical degree from Tel Aviv University. After completing his American psychiatric residency at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, he did additional training in Israel at Tel Hashomer Hospital. He further received specialty training in Child Psychiatry at Schneider Children’s Hospital in Petach Tikvah, Israel.

After his residency, Dr. Bunzel established the Department of Psychiatry at Mayanei Hayeshua Medical Center in Bnei Brak, Israel in 2003. He served as both the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and the Chief Clinical Director of both the Children’s and Adult Outpatient Clinic. In this capacity was instrumental in eventually establishing a seven- story full service psychiatric hospital in the middle of a bustling religious city which currently runs at full capacity. 

He also was the Medical Director of the Neurostimulation Institute the hospital, and was the first psychiatrist in Israel to open a Spravato (Esketamine) Center for treatment of resistant depression and built the largest center in Israel. He is conducting research and is an international lecturer in this field. In 2021 he was appointed the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the Sanz Medical Center–Laniado Hospital in Netanya. 

Since, early 2022 he was hired as the Chairman of the Department of Behavioral Health at Refuah Health Centers in Rockland County.  In addition he served as on staff psychiatrist at seven New Jersey hospitals. In addition he has a private practice in Bnei Brak, Israel.

In Israel, Dr. Bunzel has separate specialization in both General Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adult Psychiatry.  

He is recognized by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as a board certified specialist in General Psychiatry. He is a state certified physician in the states of New York and New Jersey.

Dr. Bunzel treats children from the age of 6 and treats adults and geriatric patients of all ages.

Dr. Periel Shapiro, MD

Dr. Periel Shapiro studied premedical science at Harvard University and completed medical school at Rutgers University, where he was also residency-trained in general psychiatry. His approach is to appreciate each person in their complexity and to provide individualized care that optimizes every aspect of mental health, from medication consultation to lifestyle guidance.

Dr. Shapiro is committed to providing the highest standard of care. He focuses on treating his patients holistically, understanding that a comprehensive approach to psychological well-being is essential for lasting results. By combining research validated medication interventions with stress management techniques and individualized therapies, Dr. Shapiro helps his patients find balance and peace of mind. 

He is also experienced in treating a wide range of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. 

Dr. Shapiro has had success helping patients develop positive coping strategies to manage their conditions and lead fuller lives. He strives to empower his patients with the knowledge and tools they need to take control of their mental health. 

Atara Hakakian-Levychaim


Atara Hakakian- Levychaim is a Psychiatric Physician Assistant with a focus on child psychiatry. PA Hakakian graduated From Touro  Magna Cum Laude, with a  Bachelors degree in Biology and minor in Psychology. She attended SUNY Downstate’s PA program  where she completed pediatric primary care and psychiatric specialties, graduating Cum Laude.  Atara began her career in the Pediatric Primary Care setting in 2016,  and then spent a year  training in Child Psychiatry and seeing patients at a community clinic before working at Dr. Ronen Hizamis Practice full time. 

“I recognize that most people coming to me are coming from a place of pain, and I take on a strong responsibility in alleviating this pain.”  Atara has been responsible for the evaluation, diagnoses and care of hundreds of patients, children and adults, with a broad range of diagnosis including ADHD, Anxiety/Panic, ASD, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, DMDD, OCD, Personality Disorders, Schitzophrenia.
